These pictures show how South Cheshire has been battling against winter’s icy grip this week.

Roads, footpaths and even waterways have struggled against the freezing temperatures, as this frozen shot of the Shrophire Union Canal at Nantwich Marina demonstrates.

Barges have been locked in ice for several days, while untreated minor roads in the town and rural areas have proved hazardous.

Cheshire Police yesterday issued a travel warning across the county, advising people not to drive unless necessary has ice, sleet and snow turned roads into skidpans.

And North West Ambulance Service advised people to stay indoors after reporting  sharp rise in fall-related injuries caused by the treacherous conditions under foot.

Visitors to Nantwich town centre were few and far between, with some reporting a lack of gritting on footways adding to the problems.

A Yellow weather warning from the Met Office for Cheshire East remains in place between 3pm today (February 5) and 12pm tomorrow due to icy conditions.

Temperatures are again set to plummet overnight.
