Residents in Nantwich have raised concerns over plans to build 13 new homes on land near  Shropshire Union Canal.

Elan Homes and the British Waterways Board have put the plan together for a site off Marsh Lane, Nantwich.

They say it is disused land and that a nearby children’s play area will be kept as part of the development of detached homes with parking.

But some residents living nearby have objected, fearing the development could increase flooding problems between Marsh Lane and Lea Drive (pictured).

Mr A Jones, of Marsh Lane, said: “For a very long time the length of Marsh Lane from its junction with Lea Drive and the bend just past the Gables has flooded very badly.

“Great number of young people and their parents use the lane making their way to and from both the Infants and Junior School in the Lane and Malbank High School the risk of an infection could be increased if further flooding took place.”

Neighbour Edward Leetham also cites flooding, impact on traffic and over-domination of surrounding properties as problems.

“I have no objections in principle to the developing this site for housing, but I am strongly against the way in which the developer is proposing to carry it out,” he said.

“They need to make significant changes before approval is granted.”

Canal users have raised concerns that new homes which back onto the canal could lead to more bans on boat moorings.

Peter Brown, Shrewsbury & North Wales Branch of the Inland Waterways Association, said: “British Waterways needs to enter into a commitment that it will not ban visitor mooring behind this site, as has happened behind the housing nearer the aqueduct.

“Nantwich is short of visitor moorings, and if the ones behind the site are lost, fewer boaters will visit the town, which will have a deleterious impact upon the town’s economy.”

A decision by Cheshire East Council on the planning application for new homes is expected shortly.
