Marks & Spencer is committed to a new store in Nantwich, a town councillor confirmed.

Cllr Arthur Moran said the retail giant is to open a new food outlet on the old Beam Street health centre site behind Nantwich Library, despite rumours M&S had pulled out of the development.

Cllr Moran said: “There are rumours going around town that M&S are not coming, but this is not right. They have confirmed they are still committed.

“They are hoping to commence construction of the new store in June, but are unlikely to be open until January 2013.

“I for one welcome M&S coming, it’s a great thing for the town and shows we are at the forefront in attracting big names, alongside Fat Face who are also opening here.”

M&S had originally hoped to open the new store in time for the Nantwich Food and Drink Festival in September.

I think it is great that big name stores are finding Nantwich an attractive place to open their stores but I just hope that the council do not fill the town with big names as Nantwich is a town that people enjoy visiting for its historic character and interesting individual shops. I hope that the council don’t get carried away and the on too many big names that could cause damage the individual shop trades.
