Attractions near Nantwich are celebrating after scooping top prizes at the Marketing Cheshire 2012 annual awards.

The Yew Tree Inn, in Bunbury, won the Tourism Pub of the Year, while nearby Peckforton Castle (pictured) was crowned Hotel of the Year.

Another winner was Combermere Abbey Cottages, near Aston, which won the Self Catering holiday of the Year category.

And nearby The Bear’s Paw at Warmingham in Crewe, won the Guest Accommodation of the Year category.

The awards come as new figures show Cheshire East’s visitor economy now worth more than £60o million a year to the local area.

Latest statistics show visitor numbers have increased to nearly 12 million, and that tourists are spending five per cent more than the year before.

The data was compiled using the Scarborough Tourism Economic Activity Monitor (STEAM).

Cllr Jamie Macrae, Cabinet member with responsibility for prosperity and economic regeneration, said: “These are tough times for the industry, which is under pressure from the recession, bank lending and poor weather – issues that have been particularly acute during 2012.

“This is where Cheshire East’s Visitor Economy Strategy shows its worth, as we work in partnership with Marketing Cheshire and tourism businesses to encourage more people to visit the borough.

“With beautiful countryside, charming market towns and a rich heritage, Cheshire East has a lot to offer tourists and we will continue in our efforts to market the Borough as a visitor destination.”

Other award winners included Visitor Attraction of the Year to Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre, Bed and breakfast accommodation of the year to The Bear’s Paw in Sandbach, Team of the year to the volunteers at Anson Engine Museum in Poynton, and Marketing initiative of the year to The Mere Golf Resort and Spa.
