Beth Tweddle at Nantwich Lights switch on

Thousands of people packed into the centre of Nantwich to enjoy the traditional Christmas Lights switch on event.

Families young and old were entertained by live music, fair rides, a lantern parade, fireworks and Olympic gymnast Beth Tweddle!

The rain stayed away which brought huge crowds flocking to the town square between 3pm and 7pm last night (December 1).

The event was organised by Nantwich Town Council, with help from local community radio station Redshift.

Town centre traders stayed open to help cater for the crowds, and a selection of stalls provided refreshment.

Live musical entertainment was provided by a series of excellent local performers.

These included Nantwich Young Voices, based at Stapeley Broad Lane School, local band Hex, and guitarist and singer Tim Gallagher.

Youngsters enjoyed a special lantern parade. They made their own lanterns with help from Richmond Village and Redshift staff.

But the biggest cheer of the night was saved for home-grown talent Beth Tweddle as she took to the stage at around 6.30pm.

Despite the sound system problems, the former Crewe & Nantwich Gymnastics Club member thanked the packed crowds for their support during the London Olympics.

She then performed the lights switch on with Nantwich Town Mayor Cllr Graham Fenton.

Blitz Fireworks provided a small firework display after the lights were switched on.

  1. Talk about double standards! The Christmas lights are switched on in Nantwich Town Centre, but the lights are to be switched off or powered down elsewhere. This is supposed to be in the interest of saving money. So, when the lights go down on all of us, will our illustrious Council go down with us, or will they have their own candle.
