Organisers of this weekend’s Nantwich Christmas Lights switch on are urging families to get to town early.

Thousands are expected to pack the town centre for the festive event which starts at 5.30pm in the town square.

Nantwich Town FC is offering free parking at its Weaver Stadium ground on Waterlode after 4pm to help cope with the crowds.

Large crowds gathered to watch the celebrity switch on and firework display 12 months ago.

And with extra attractions this time, greater numbers are expected for the event organized by Nantwich Town Council, with support from the community and local businesses.

Celebrity TV vet Steve Leonard will be performing the switch on, and Britain’s Got Talent dancers AJ and Chloe will be dancing live at the event.

Nantwich Deputy Mayor Cllr Christine Farrall said: “We will be staging a super Christmas Lights switch on this year in Nantwich.

“Everyone has really pulled together to make this happen and the free parking offered by Nantwich Town is typical of the support we have received from local businesses and organisations.

“We thank them, and all the local businesses who have contributed to something that is obviously so good for Nantwich as a whole.

“We are expecting big crowds for this occasion and a great atmosphere.

“The town is getting quite a reputation across the region for the number and quality of the events we put on, and we think this one will be just as good.

“As well as the switch on itself, performed by Nantwich’s own TV Vet Steve Leonard, we will have performances from local dancers AJ and Chloe who performed so well in front of a TV audience of 13 million in Britain’s Got Talent.

“Father Christmas will be with us, and there will be a children’s fairground, seasonal music, carol singing, and a hog roast, among other attractions.

“We will finish with a spectacular musical firework finale by Blitz Fireworks, which is going to be really special!”

Chamber of Commerce director Shaun Cafferty encouraged people to visit the town during the day, so they can get an early position for the start of the entertainment.

“We have a farmers’ market that day, as well as our great regular indoor market, so we are encouraging people to make a day of it and come and enjoy our range of special shops and café culture beforehand,” he said.

“There is a lot to see and do even before the event itself begins at 5.30pm, and early visitors will be able to secure the best positions to see everything.

“It promises to be an unmissable event, so come to Nantwich this Saturday.”
