Stewart Gandy, cyclist killed on A530, man on trial

Police want to trace two drivers who may be key witnesses to the road accident near Nantwich which killed cyclist Stewart Gandy.

Mr Gandy (pictured) was in collision with a lorry as he rode his bike along the A530 Whitchurch Road in Baddington.

The 65-year-old, from Wistaston, died at the scene on November 12.

The lorry did not stop at the scene and was later traced by police. A 36-year-old man was arrested in Wigan and bailed pending further inquiries.

PC Paul Burke said: “We are appealing to two drivers who were travelling along Park Road in Nantwich towards Shrewbridge Road Lake in the general direction of Whitchurch around 1.30pm to contact us as they may be able to help us with our enquiries.

“The first vehicle is described as a small dark-coloured hatchback and the second is a white transit-sized van.

“Both are likely to have passed Stewart, who was wearing a black and red-coloured cycle top, before the collision took place.

“I would urge them to get in contact in order to assist us with our inquiries.”

Anyone who witnessed what happened or has any information is urged to call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 453 of 12 November.

  1. Sincere condolences to Mr Gandy’s family. As a regular cyclist, I’m amazed how completely invisible you are to drivers. I now find that unless I can look directly into the eyes of a driver at a junction and see that he has seen me, it’s best just to hold back, regardless of any give-way lines.

The other danger, which seems petty, but isn’t, is the uncontrolled dog that attacks without warning. I don’t suppose they’re doing much more than noisy chasing, but on several occasions, I’ve been wobbling in traffic trying to avoid snapping jaws.
