Crewe & Nantwich RUFC player Joshua Collins, scored against Hereford

Crewe & Nantwich RUFC scored a key victory and bonus point over Camphill in their chase for promotion.

The Vagrants side battled the elements as well as their opponents to secure a 29-5 win at Malbank School in Nantwich.

The Crewe pack took early control with some excellent set piece work and driving rugby, only to be pinned back by the Camphill fly-half after conceding penalties and unforced errors.

But under the guidance of fly-half Jamie Little and scrum-half Scott Cann, they secured a wealth of possession and good field positions.

The first try was scored by Camphill when Crewe conceded a penalty resulting in a line-out in the Crewe 22. A couple of phases later and Camphill barged over.

This spurred on the hosts who forced a penalty in the bottom corner after good carry by flanker Josh Collins.

Scrumhalf Cann fed captain Niall McGregor and from the driving maul, hooker Eli Woodward grounded the ball.

No 8 Kirk Robinson finally crashed over for his trademark try to increase the lead, and after half time, 2nd row Phil Alcock crashed over from a maul with a dramatic dive through two defenders.

The fourth and bonus point try came as a clearance was caught by second row Phil Alcock who wrestled the ball to score his second score of the day.

The final try of the game was the 2nd try for hooker Woodward who picked up a loose ball five metres out from the try line and powered over.

Coach Andy Brown said: “There is still room for improvement but the normally unsung heroes – the forwards scored all the tries and dominated the match.

“One player scrummaged with great effect, tackled everything, had several effective carries and hit rucks and mauls with real power – prop forward Al Hargreaves unanimously earned the Man of the Match award!”

Crewe have seven league games left and  are second in the league. They face three consecutive away games at Willenhall, Wolverhampton and Leek.
