A new service to help vulnerable and isolated people in Nantwich and Crewe has already recruited 11 big-hearted volunteers.

Cheshire Community Action’s volunteer “car scheme” aims to help people who have difficulty using public transport.

Volunteers are recruited to help take those people to visit the doctor, hospital, dentist, shops, family and friends.

Now Cheshire Community Action is asking for more volunteer drivers to help cope with the demand on the service, which is part subsidised by Cheshire East Council.

Mark Reading, chief operating officer at Cheshire Community Action, said: “The Crewe and Nantwich volunteer car scheme has got off to a great start.

“Already, there are vulnerable, elderly and isolated people who are receiving help.

“It is providing them with a lifeline by helping them stay independent.

“However, we cannot run the scheme without the support of our team of volunteer drivers and we hope more people will offer to join this wonderful group of people.”

As a volunteer driver, you would use your own vehicle to transport passengers, and you would be reimbursed for all expenses.

You can do as few or as many journeys as you like. CCA also handles all the bookings.

Drivers on the scheme in Chester, where it has operated for 12 years, say they benefit from being part of such an important service within their local community.

It also leads to new friends and helping many people who are in need of medical treatment or social contact.

If you can offer an hour or two each week and make a difference to someone who struggles, get in touch.
