Police and fire chiefs are treating a blaze at a Crewe youth centre as suspected arson.

The fire on Mirion Street badly damaged the vacant building, caused chaos on surrounding roads during busy peak period.

The nearby Crewe & Nantwich Athletics Club also had to cancel its training night at Cumberland Arena because of the incident.

Many residents on nearby roads in the Queen Street and Henry Street area were warned to stay indoors because of fumes.

Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the building to carry out precautionary checks to ensure the property was empty at the time.

A spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue said: “We will be treating this fire as suspicious and working with Cheshire Police to find whoever is responsible.”
