Welshmans Lane, Nantwich

Councillors are to fight revamped plans to demolish a cottage and build 19 new homes on a narrow lane in Nantwich.

Renew Land Developments Ltd want to knock down Greenbank Cottage on Welshmans Lane and build 19 new properties.

They have submitted new plans after their initial proposals were thrown out by Cheshire East Council.

The site is not in the new Cheshire East Local Plan of approved development sites for Nantwich.

But the applicants are hoping to get permission as Cheshire East continues to struggle to prove it has a5-year housing supply.

Town councillors reacted angrily at the plans, which they say will make the lane and the junction with Waterlode more dangerous.

It also borders the entrance to a council-owned allotment site, and will be close to the massive Reaseheath College/Mosaic Estates development at Kingsley Fields.

Cllr Graham Fenton said: “This is on a bad bend on a narrow road, the access is not good, and there’s no speed limit down that lane.”

Nantwich Town Council clerk Ian Hope said some allotment holders had voiced concern over the plans because of traffic.

“If there is a vehicle parked as they open the gate to the allotments, it could be dangerous,” he added.

Cllr Stuart Hutton: “I think Nantwich has taken more than its fair share of  new housing allocation and we should oppose this.”

Councillors at last night’s Nantwich Town Council meetings also voiced their objection to the first of a series of detailed applications for the housing development off Queens Drive.

The application has been submitted by Bovis Homes for the first phase of the 270-property site which Gladman won approval for after taking it to appeal last year.

The submission is for eight two-storey dwellings.

Cllr Hopkin said: “We have been against this application from the start. The access is unacceptable, but we’ve been dealt the hand we have.

“But we must put down on record our regret that this development is going ahead.”

Cllr Hutton added: “It was a ridiculous idea when it first came before the council and still is. Object, object, object!

“But there’s nothing this council can do about it because Mr Pickles has taken all power away at a local level.”
