Opening of new neonatel unit at Leighton Hospital

A new neonatal intensive care unit funded by a two-year charity appeal has been officially opened at Leighton Hospital, near Nantwich.

Guests including Crewe & Nantwich MP Edward Timpson, who attended the opening, were given a tour of the unit to see the new facilities.

The new unit was made possible by the success of the “One in Eleven Appeal” launched by Mid Cheshire Hospitals Charity in 2012, which raised £1.8 million.

Local supporters and donors who attended the official opening included The Frank Hockenhull Trust, Middlewich High School Community Choir, Wincanton Logistics, RedShift Radio and Vale Royal Abbey Golf Club.

Dennis Dunn MBE, Mid Cheshire Hospitals Foundation Trust chairman, said: “I’d like to thank everybody who supported and donated to the One in Eleven Appeal, enabling us to construct one of the best neonatal facilities in the UK in just two years.

“It’s fantastic to see so many local people and businesses support their local community.

“Without these donations and support, we wouldn’t have achieved this.”

The new facility now has a modern layout, more space and offers privacy and comfort for families and parents.

Laura Riddle, charity manager, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to announce the opening of the new neonatal intensive care unit at Leighton Hospital, creating a first class facility for babies, their families and our staff.

“We would like to thank everybody who supported and donated to the One in Eleven Appeal.

“They’ve all played a wonderful part in funding this new facility, which will provide privacy and comfort for families, parents and babies in hospital.”

Around 3,000 babies are born at Mid Cheshire Hospitals each year, with one in eleven of these needing additional support, ranging from a couple of hours of special care to several weeks in an intensive care unit.
