Josh Howie, live comedy

Nantwich welcomed back another year of Very Best in Stand Up – and once again it did not disappoint.

Four very different comedians welcomed in the 2015 programme with a rip-roaring show to a packed out Nantwich Civic Hall.

And they helped warm the audience despite the chill of the temporary toilets outside on a freezing night.

Compere Andrew Bird took no time at all to rouse the crowd, with his cheeky banter that certain primary school headteacher and scout leader won’t forget in a hurry.

One of the hits of the night was the opening act, John Robins.

The Bristol-born funnyman had an instant connection to his audience.

More than happy with the edgy stuff, Robins was happy to poke fun at himself as well as everyone else.

There were certainly some subtle influences on his comedy from former flatmates Russell Howard and Jon Richardson, who are now in the big time.

His delivery and timing was excellent, and he was certainly a hit if not quite “the catch” he was promising to the ladies in the crowd!

Second on stage was Grimsby man Lloyd Griffith – who was taken aback from the first minute when he found another Grimsby man in the crowd!

A little hit and miss at times, Griffith delivered some brilliant material which was perhaps lost on the audience at times because of his speed and twang.

But as reviewers have pointed out, he is certainly one to watch as he hones his performances.

Bird did a splendid job linking the acts and warming the audience back up after each interval.

Headline act Josh Howie (pictured) delivered a class act – a blend of sharp, on-the-edge observation, clever one-liners and full-on blue gags.

Perhaps not everyone’s cup of tea, Howie has a style all his own which will continue to earn him rave reviews.

And it’s always good to see a comedian take on and enjoy the hecklers – turning the challenge into quality ad-lib material.

It was another great night of entertainment as organisers continue to pack out the venue in these monthly treats.
