Grease Is The Word for hairdressing students

Hairdressing students in Crewe and Nantwich were shining stars after playing a leading role in a charity production of hit musical Grease.

The South Cheshire College group delivered a range of dazzling hairstyles for cast members before they took to the stage for performances at Crewe’s Lyceum Theatre.

As well as putting their own hairdressing styles into practice on the cast, students prepared wigs for performers in the show, produced by Curtain Call Productions.

The sell-out shows, based on the West End production, raised cash for Cancer Research UK, and were packed with classic songs such as ‘Grease Lightning’ and ‘You’re The One That I Want.’

Hairdressing NVQ Level 3 students who helped out included Liz Evered, Joss Atkins, Hayley Preece, Chelsea Kershaw, Lauren Bermingham and Steph Brindle.

Students received training and were guided through early performances by David Birt, from Wigmasters, who works on hairstyles for professional actors on many London West End shows.

Chelsea Kershaw, 19, said: “I loved every minute of being a part of the Grease back-stage team.

“Even though it was an amateur production, it felt like a totally professional performance in every sense.

“It gave us all the opportunity to demonstrate our hairdressing skills and work with David Birt who is an experienced hair professional.

“I’m enjoying the hairdressing course and this theatre experience has opened my eyes to a whole new career.”

South Cheshire College hairdressing lecturer Anne Pickering said: “The group were a credit to South Cheshire College and found the experience amazing.

“This was an opportunity to showcase their work to a wide audience and help out behind the scenes with a live theatre production.

“Hopefully, this is just the start of an exciting partnership between the College and Curtain Call Productions.”
