summer reading challenge

Nantwich Library is preparing to launch its popular Summer Reading Challenge for youngsters as part of a national initiative.

And this year, young readers in the town will be exploring real-life achievements and world records as featured in the Guinness World Records Books.

The annual challenge – organised nationally by The Reading Agency charity and public library network – is aimed at 4 to 11 year olds and their families.

Children are encouraged to visit Nantwich Library on Beam Street four times over the summer holidays and read six or more library books of their choice.

There are collectable incentives and rewards, and every child who completes the challenge receives a certificate and medal at a special ceremony.

Children can sign up at Nantwich library from this Saturday July 11, and it’s free.

This year the Summer Reading Challenge has teamed up with Guinness World Records to establish a “Record Breakers” themed Challenge.

Record Breakers brings together fact and fiction, challenging young readers to explore astonishing real-life achievements and world records.

And as part of this year’s Challenge, children, parents, carers, young volunteers, teachers, much-loved children’s authors will be asked to make a pledge to help set a new Guinness World Records™ title for the Most Pledges Received for a Reading Campaign!

Public libraries are collecting pledges across the UK. Nantwich Library will be collecting these on Saturday July 11 from 9.30am to midday.

Last year, 5,770 children in Cheshire East participated, and almost two third of those completed the challenge and received a medal and certificate.

One parent from Nantwich said: “The children were very excited to take part in the challenge again this summer.

“It really helps the children to read a little every day.”
