Nantwich Aqueduct

An open day at Nantwich Marina will also unveil plans for the major Nantwich Aqueduct refurbishment project.

Sheila and Bill Saner, who run Nantwich Marina off the A534, are staging the event this Saturday, August 22.

Visitors will be able to look around the marina, inside boats and sample the shops on the site, and refreshments in the Waterside Café.

Staff from Canals and River Trust will also be there to discuss the planned restoration works to the Aqueduct which are due to start in September.

The aqueduct, built by Thomas Telford, carries the Shropshire Union Canal over the A534 road and is a Grade II listed structure.

It is nearly 200 years old, but as a gateway to Nantwich it’s condition is deterioating.

Sarah Lalieu, enterprise manager with the Canal & River Trust, said: “This is an ideal opportunity for local residents to find out about the restoration work planned for Nantwich Aqueduct.

“The project has been developed following requests from local people.

“The Trust and partners, Cheshire East Council, Nantwich Town Council, Acton Parish Council and Nantwich Partnership have secured £200,000 to fund the project and the work is due to start in September.”

Members of Nantwich Partnership will be on hand to outline other projects planned for canal walks and other parts of the town.

The partnership is holding a raffle to raise funds for the Canal and River Trust and will hold a fun craft workshop for visitors.

Sheila Saner said: “We are hoping visitors will enjoy seeing what the marina has to offer. We are a part of the heritage of Nantwich being just at the bottom of Welsh Row.

“We welcome everyone to enjoy a day of fun where we will be giving out discount vouchers and special offers from our café, laundrette and other stalls.”

Nantwich Museum is loaning the event some information panels about life on the waterways.

Nantwich Marina Open Day is on August 22, 10am to 4pm.
