Regan, playing U10s Crewe & Nantwich

Crewe & Nantwich RUFC are hoping to launch new girls rugby teams aimed at teenagers.

The Vagrants club is keen to reach out and plug a gap as teenage girls keen on the sport currently have no side to play for locally once they reach 13.

Nantwich mum Cherie Davies’s daughter Regan (pictured) currently plays for the U10s boys team at Crewe & Nantwich as mixed teams are allowed at mini rugby level.

But once Regan reaches the U13s level, mixed teams are not permitted under RFU rules and she faces having to find a club out of the area or give the sport up.

Cherie, from Stapeley, said: “This is a big deal for Regan, she has been playing since she was five years old.

“Regan would have no option but to join a club with an all girls team from year 8, unless Crewe & Nantwich can provide a girls team.

“Currently, it goes from juniors to ladies with a big gap in the middle.”

Now the club is staging a taster session this Friday (October 16) aimed at girls aged 13 to 18.

Any girls interested can attend between 6-7pm at the Vagrants on Newcastle Road, Willaston, and find out how to get involved.

“It would fantastic to get some girls teams set up,” added Cherie.

“There must be loads of teenage girls who love sport around Crewe and Nantwich who should come and give it a go as it’s a fantastic team game.

“Regan has been at Crewe & Nantwich since she was five, so would be a great loss if she had to leave if there’s no team for her.”
