banjo auctioned for charity shop

A mystery donor has left an antique banjo to Nantwich’s local Shelter shop – which could fetch £500 at auction!

Staff at the Beam Street store were stunned when they discovered how much the musical instrument could be sold for at auction later this week.

And if it fetches the estimated value of between £300 and £500, it will provide essential funds for the Shelter campaign to fight poor housing and homelessness.

Sue, the manager of the Nantwich Shelter shop, said the banjo was donated to the shop but the donor remains unknown.

She originally displayed the item in the shop window at the end of the day for £25, not realising its true value.

“By 9am the following morning, a man from the local auction house had arrived at the shop,” she said.

“He kindly volunteered to sell the banjo on behalf of the Shelter shop for an estimated value of over £300!”

The generous donor remains unknown so the banjo has not been gift-aided.

This means the charity cannot claim an extra 25% of the item’s sale price back from the Government.

Laura Morgans, volunteering officer for Shelter Retail, said: “We rely on the generosity of our donors and volunteers especially at Christmas time.

“Without the offer of voluntary help from the local auction house and the support from our volunteers, we would not have been able to raise as much money as possible from this invaluable donation.

“On behalf of the Shelter Shop in Nantwich, we’d like to say a huge thank you to the donor of the banjo and to the auctioneer, as all money raised from this wonderful donation supports Shelter’s work to make sure no one faces bad housing or homelessness alone.”

The Shelter shop in Nantwich will be hosting a Christmas cracker sale and welcome day for prospective volunteers and shoppers on December 4.
