Crewe engineering and design UTC open day

Scores of businesses and prospective students attended a Crewe Engineering & Design UTC open day event.

The open day was held at MMU Cheshire Campus in Crewe, aimed at inspiring the next generation of engineers, designers and innovators.

Students met UTC staff to discuss options available at the new University Technical College.

There were also talks from Principal David Terry and MMU Head of School of Engineering, Dr Georgina Harris.

Industry partners were present, including Bentley, Siemens, Bosch, GE, OSL Rail, Chevron, James Walker and Optical 3D.

David Terry, Principal of Crewe E&D UTC, said: “We can’t underestimate how important Crewe E & D UTC is for the future of engineering in the country.

“I’d like to offer my sincere thanks to all of our partners for the time that they’ve invested into our fantastic school.”

Dr Georgina Harris added: “Crewe Engineering & Design UTC is inspiring local young people to enter the engineering profession.

“This excellent event has generated real excitement about the possibilities our UTC and STEM subjects can offer.”

Dr Mark Marsh, of Bentley Motors, said: “From a point of view of employing local young people living in towns such as Middlewich, Winsford, Sandbach, Congleton and Nantwich, Crewe E&D UTC is central to ensure the continued success of our company in this region.

“We’ve always been committed to providing careers to locally based youth, through our partnership with the UTC in Crewe, we’re looking forward to working closely with Engineers of the future.”

Lisa Smith, HR for James Walker, added: “It was our first time as an exhibitor at a Crewe E&D UTC event.

“I’ve been really impressed with not just the turn out, but the enthusiasm of the young people that I’ve had the pleasure to meet.”

Crewe E & D UTC will open its doors in September 2016.

Applications are currently open, with places being allocated from January 31 onwards.
