Medieval Fair by Les Pickford - Pictures are Powerful exhibition

A new Pictures are Powerful exhibition has opened in the Your Space Gallery at Nantwich Museum.

The display, running from February 9 to March 19, has been curated by the museum’s artist Les Pickford.

It examines the way historical events are illustrated.

It is said a picture is worth 1000 words.

Accuracy is important but is influenced by current knowledge of the historical event, the accuracy of contemporary illustrations, the target audience and the artist’s own style.

The exhibition considers these challenges in recreating the past with reference to various aspects of Nantwich’s rich history including the project to illustrate a medieval fair.

Comics are available which tell the story of the town’s salt industry, the Great Fire of 1583 and the Civil War Battle of Nantwich.

They illustrate how complex stories can be told through simple narratives and images which remain in the memory.

The work of local artists provides examples of challenges facing historical illustrators.

And sketchbooks and preliminary drafts of illustrations for the museum’s forthcoming exhibition Nantwich Besieged provide a glimpse of things to come.

Entry to the museum and exhibition is free.

Prints of the Medieval Fair and the comics can be bought from the museum shop in support of museum funds.
