Nantwich Town steward at FA Trophy game with Halifax where fans disturbance took place

Nantwich Town has issued an apology to fans who witnessed or were caught up in trouble before the FA Trophy game with Halifax.

More than 2,000 supporters packed in to the Weaver Stadium on Saturday.

But a small number from Halifax and Nantwich were involved in “unpleasant scenes” in the Whitby Morrison stand before kick off.

The match had already been delayed by 15 minutes due to traffic problems.

Then police and stewards had to move in to the stand to tackle disorder among opposing fans.

Five men have since been charged in relation to disorder at the match.

Criticism on social media was targeted at the club for not segregating opposing fans.

In a statement, Nantwich Town said: “We share frustrations and disappointment on the mindless “non-football supporters” who unfortunately came to Nantwich and put a tarnish on what was a most wonderful day, for our supporters, players and everyone connected with the club.

“We had a very short space of time to put the plans and logistics of this game together.

“We worked closely with the police, who did not request the game be ‘All Ticket or to have segregation.

“We had many additional fully qualified stewards and fully qualified paramedics complete with ambulance in place on the day.

“We would like to thank Cheshire Police who dealt with the incident quickly, professionally and effectively.

“We apologise if the mindless few spoilt your or anyone else’s enjoyment of what was a magnificent day and a great committed performance from our team.

“Please be assured all of us as volunteers have worked tirelessly this past week in the short time that we had to meet the criteria laid down by both the FA and the Police.”
