Cllr David Marren, town centre flag

Nantwich town councillors are planning to design and launch the town’s own flag.

The town centre is awash with patriotic colour with flags are flying and bunting hanging high.

Last summer, the town council decorated the centre with Union flags and this year they have decided to add a limited number of flags from the Home Nations on the Saints’ days.

And now the council is considering creating a flag for the town – and has called on residents and businesses for their views.

Councillors believe investing in commercial flagpole accessories so they can fly flags and bunting brightens up the tourist town, making it more attractive to visitors and residents.

Cllr David Marren, of Nantwich Town Council, said: “I am really pleased to see the flags and bunting in the town.

“As a busy town, with an ever increasing number of visitors, I feel it adds to the town’s attraction and complements the wide range of events and festivals we host.

“I’ve had a number of enthusiastic conversations with complete strangers as I’ve wandered around the town centre and I’m really pleased with the display.”

They hope the launch of a Nantwich flag will help foster a sense of identity.

“Flags create a symbol which members of the community can relate to,” added Cllr Marren.

“A Nantwich flag would bring the town’s diversity together under one banner, celebrating the town’s unique character and reinforcing its personality and independence.

“It would cement the idea of combined responsibility in the town and give community members something to feel proud of.

“We’d like to know what people think.”

If there is support, the council will create a number of designs and ask for feedback before choosing a design.

Ot it may run a competition and invite people to submit designs.

The design could reflect:
• The meanings of local place names
• Local legends and folklore
• Traditional emblems and colours
• Achievements of local people
• Local industries (past and present) (salt, leather, clothing, agriculture)
• Accepted nicknames for local people
