Open Farm Sunday Cheshire Wildlife Trust

Cheshire Wildlife Trust will throw open its farm gates to the public in June.

The trust’s 210-acre Bickley Hall Farm site will take part in LEAF’s (Linking Environment and Farming) national Open Farm Sunday event on June 5.

Visitors are invited to soak up the sights, sounds, and scenery and discover more about farming and conservation at the wildlife-friendly farm on the Cholmondeley Estate.

There will be activities including guided wildlife walks, birds of prey displays, pond dipping, newt trapping and donkey rides, and arts and crafts events such as willow weaving and badge making.

Visitors can learn more about trust’s conservation projects and visitors can find out about the Bee Garden Bee Count taking place on July 17.

Exhibitors at this year’s event include The Feathery Folk, Cotebrook Shire Horse Centre and Delamere Dairy.

And there will be refreshments including conservation beef burgers and homemade cakes and biscuits.

Jan Shone, People and Wildlife Team Leader at the trust, said: “Open Farm Sunday is such a great event to be a part of, we’re really looking forward to welcoming people through the gates to learn more about what we do and how they can get involved.

“We’ll be running guided walks throughout the day and trust staff will be on hand to answer any questions and point out the favourite haunts of farmland wildlife.

“We have all sorts of wildlife here, including barn owls, harvest mice, hares and lapwings.

“In recent years we’ve recorded some of the highest numbers of butterflies found anywhere in the county and it’s a stronghold for great crested newts and farmland birds – there will certainly be plenty for visitors to see.”

The event is free and takes place from 11am to 4pm.
