drink and drug driving crackdown - Cheshire Police Drink Drive campaign

More than 160 drive drive arrests and more than 90 drug drive arrests were made by Cheshire Police during its Operation Roadster crackdown.

The force’s summer campaign saw officers carry out 1,074 roadside breath tests, with 163 arrests made.

Twenty-four of these were in the Crewe and Nantwich policing area, including five in Nantwich itself.

And they also made 155 drug wipe screens, leading to a further 92 arrests – 18 of which were in the Crewe and Nantwich policing area.

Figures released show the number of arrests for both drink and drug driving has risen compared to the previous three years of 2013, 2014 and 2015 – despite fewer breath tests carried out.

This year’s campaign was carried out from June 6 to July 10.

Inspector Steve Griffiths, of Cheshire Police Roads Policing Unit, said: “Operation Roadster overall has been a success for the Roads Policing Unit.

“We have had more officers trained to use the roadside testing kits and we made a significant number of arrests throughout the county.

“However, it is disappointing to see people are still choosing to drive under the influence of drink and drugs and do not see the dangers they are putting not only themselves in, but others too.

“Drink and drug driving is extremely dangerous.

“It will affect your reaction time making it harder for you to judge your speed, judge the distance between you and other vehicles and notice hazards on the roads.

“All of this means you are more likely to be involved in a collision, which could be fatal.

“Even though Operation Roadster has come to a conclusion, officers will continue to work hard to reduce the number of drink and drug drivers in Cheshire, helping to make our roads safer.”
