Straw Peter Rabbit snugburys

Big-hearted residents have set up a fund-raiser to replace the Peter Rabbit straw sculpture in Nantwich which was burnt down by arsonists.

Police are hunting the offenders suspected of setting the 40-ft structure ablaze at Snugburys ice cream farm off the A51 in Hurleston.

The structure has been a massive hit since being unveiled last year to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Beatrix Potter.

Tens of thousands of people have visited the sculpture, and many were devastated when the fire broke out on Thursday at around 5.30pm.

Now a crowd-funding campaign set up on JustGiving has raised more than £900 in 24 hours – almost reaching its initial £1,000 target.

Sean Whalley, the man behind the crowdfunding campaign, said: “After mindless idiots set fire to the famous Snugburys attraction we would like to make a contribution to the renovation and rebuild of a new sculpture.

“It’s to show that such sad and thoughtless acts of vandalism will not be tolerated and that the attraction will continue to be enjoyed by many!”

Inspector Stuart York, of Cheshire Police, said: “Fortunately, no-one was injured as a result of the fire but the consequences could have been worse had the fire not been put out so quickly, given its proximity to a major road.

“We are currently following up a number of lines of enquiry and I am keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and may have seen anyone acting suspiciously.

“If anyone believes that they have any information that could assist with our enquiries please come forward.”

Anyone with any information is urged to call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 742 of February 2.

Information can also be left anonymously, via Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.

  1. Racheal, why don’t you start up your worthy cause crowd fund.
This rabbit obviously has brought a smile to all that spot him, and is the simple highlight of a daily trip to work for many.

  2. Greta Thomas says:

Is there someone to contact to volunteer our help with the rebuilding of this bunny?
    We all want Peter back!!

  3. Rachel Evans says:

So many other worthy causes around Crewe and nantwich area that could benefit much more from this money than the re building of Peter rabbit. I was sad it happened. But I’m sure snugburys have more than enough money to re build it.
Sorry if I sound negative but this is a waste of money. Might show these arsonists that we won’t stand for that behaviour but at the end of the day it can’t changed what’s happened.
