South Cheshire College, Crewe student awards 2017

Top Crewe and Nantwich students celebrated honours at the South and West Cheshire College annual awards night.

There were 34 individual awards presented to students studying a range of academic and vocational courses from A Levels to Access courses at the newly formed college.

Jasbir Dhesi, Principal and Chief Executive at South and West Cheshire College, said: “Together South and West Cheshire College have a combined history of more than 300 years supporting students, employers and our local communities across Cheshire.

“The students have shown outstanding commitment and dedication to their studies and it’s wonderful that we can celebrate with them and their families.”

The evening started with a stunning performance by Jolene Bannister-Ashley, 19, from Crewe (pictured, below) who also won the Performing Arts Student of the Year award.

Guest speaker was engineer and Edutuber Ruth Amos.

Ruth, who also presented the awards, invented StairSteady as part of her GCSEs in 2006.

She went on to set up her own company and is now involved with promoting engineering as a career to young people through her YouTube Channel ‘Kids Invest Stuff.’

The event ended with four special Golden Awards presented to students who have excelled during the past 12 months.

Adult Learner of the Year was Farbelly Florez, 38, from Crewe; Outstanding Progress Award went to George Basford, 17, from Crewe; Principal’s Prize for Contribution to College Life went to Lydia Greatrix, 18, from Hinstock, Shropshire; and College Award for Excellence wen to Sean Houlston, 18, from Crewe.

George, who also won ICT Student of the Year and English and Maths Student of the Year, said: “I studied Level 2 ICT.

“It was a great course to be on and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

“My tutors were very supportive throughout and explained everything really well.

“I am absolutely over the moon to receive three awards this evening!”

Adult Learner of the Year Farbelly said: “I have just completed my Hairdresser Level 3 and I have really enjoyed the course.

“The tutors have all been really supportive and encouraging, especially as I find it difficult as I’m from Columbia, so I am still learning and picking up the English language.

“When I first heard the news about the award, I didn’t really understand or comprehend it properly, it was only when I received the letter from the college that evening that I realised.

“It was lovely to receive the award and I really enjoyed the ceremony.”

Lydia Greatrix, said: “I have just completed my A-Levels in Economics, Maths and French, which has been a really positive experience.

“My economics Tutor Sarah has been particularly supportive and just generally really friendly.

“I’m sure we’ll keep in touch when I head off to university.

“I am hoping to get into Leeds to study Journalism, but I don’t find out until August so shall keep my fingers crossed until then.

“It was really nice to have been recognised at the awards.”
