South Cheshire College students will benefit from a new partnership with the county’s professional basketball team, Cheshire Phoenix.
The club, known as ‘The Nix’, works with communities striving to get young people active, interested in basketball and embracing healthy living.
And the new partnership will allow Crewe and Nantwich students on the college’s Basketball Academy to benefit from an enhanced development programme.
It will open up professional facilities, coaching and teaching practices.
Jon Keresztury, Sports lecturer & Basketball Academy Coach at South Cheshire College, said: “The Academy is designed to meet the needs of elite athletes aged between 16-19 who wish to combine academic studies with a sporting career.
“Partnering with Cheshire Phoenix is a really exciting time for us as our college players will have the opportunity to play for the club, as well as their national under 18 league team.”
The Basketball Academy now has the resource required to play in the Academy Basketball League (ABL) – the second highest league for college players.
And there is also a chance for players to train with the professional team – and be part of the team’s roster for the 2017/18 season if they raise their game.
Jon added: “A student who has already grabbed this opportunity with both hands is Louis Rogerson-Evans.
“Louis will be playing next year, both for the college’s Basketball Academy team and Cheshire Phoenix BBL team.
“Given that Cheshire Phoenix is a well-known brand, as well as a highly competitive club, players have a huge opportunity to develop, progress and play at a good level, leading to greater potential to fulfill their goals in basketball.
“Louis will gain a quality education at college together with professional coaching to set him in good stead both academically and as an athlete.
“This could mean progressing on to university, gaining a scholarship, or even pursuing a professional career in the sport, a unique benefit.”
James Brice, Cheshire Phoenix Coach and General Manager, said: “As a club, our goals are ambitious and we strive to improve year on year, continuing to build on the solid foundations that have been placed over the past 3 years.
“The college’s Basketball Academy players will have access to our coaches, fantastic facilities which include our newly built Cheshire Oaks Arena at Ellesmere Port Sports Village, and the support and training it takes to be a successful athlete.
“We’re looking forward to be working with South Cheshire College and see the talented students go on to do great things.”
The Basketball Academy is now looking to expand its programme and is recruiting for September.
