Plans are now being unveiled to dual the final stretch of the A500 between Shavington bypass and the M6.

Cheshire East Council is to launch a public consultation on the proposals which will involve widening the current single carriageway stretch between the roundabout at the B5472 and the new dual carriageway section near the M6, junction 16.

Council chiefs say the improvement will ease congestion for thousands of Crewe and Nantwich commuters who use the stretch every day.

It’s also part of the growth plan for Crewe around the HS2 rail expansion.

Outline designs from Cheshire East Council are now ready to inspect and local residents and users can now view these and add their comments.

To view the proposals and meet members of the project team, visit The Village Hall, Radway Green Road, Barthomley, CW2 5PE on Saturday September 23 9am – 4pm.

The consultation will run until November 1.

  1. Surely there also needs to be a proposal to allow traffic not wishing to join the M6 but to continue on the A500 in either direction, to avoid having to negotiate the Junction 16 roundabout and go straight through via either a flyover or an underpass. There are plenty of examples of this having been done elsewhere and it has always been a great reducer of traffic congestion.

Of course the planners are to be commended for picking this up after missing the original opportunity to make it a dual carriageway as a single carriageway from a motorway junction to a dual carriageway bypass was never going to be a bottleneck ! Was it ? Pure genius
