Millfields Primary pupils join Rotary to plant 105 trees at Coed Wen

Millfields Primary School pupils joined Nantwich Rotary volunteers for tree planting at Coed Wen.

Nantwich Rotary Club President Tony Hoy teamed up with the youngsters and Nantwich in Bloom’s Doug Butterill for the project.

Coed Wen is Nantwich’s Community Woodland, and the planting was part of the Rotary International pledge to plant 1.2 million trees before Earth Day on April 22, 2018.

Tony said: “Protecting the environment and curbing climate change are essential elements of Rotary’s goal of sustainable service, and environmental degradation is now one of the main threats listed by the UN.

“These 105 trees will remove carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the air, so we are doing our bit here in Nantwich to help slow global warming.

“They will also help attract more wildlife to the area.”

Millfields teacher Roxanne Davenport added: “The children really enjoyed themselves planting the trees, and we will come back in the Spring to see how much they’ve grown.”

The trees were donated by the Rotary Club of Nantwich and include hawthorn, dogwood, wild cherry, silver birch, rowan, and hazel.

Local wildlife expert and ‘Nantwich In Bloom’ committee member, Doug Butterill, was on hand to give advice and has promised to return to give the children some nature lessons in the Spring.
