Aldi store and warehouse staff in Crewe and Nantwich are to receive a pay rise in January, the company has said.

It’s believed it will become the first supermarket in the UK to guarantee employees a pay of at least £12 an hour.

Cheshire East Council has no plans to introduce parking charges on the council-owned staff car park in Sandbach – meaning its workers will continue to park free if others are charged.

The cash-strapped council has consulted with residents on plans to introduce charges in “free-parking” towns like Sandbach and to revise charges – mainly upwards – in those which already pay such as Nantwich.

Cheshire East Council is “slowly reducing” the backlog of planning applications despite still struggling to retain and recruit skilled staff.

A report to the council’s environment and communities committee says the number of live applications in the backlog has reduced over the 12 month period from 2,654 to 1,959, at the end of March 2023.
