Historic Crewe Works to receive upgrade amid new HS2 contract

The historic Crewe Works site is to receive major investment after site owners Alstom won an HS2 contract to build a new generation of 54 high speed trains in North and Midlands.

Formally owned by Bombardier, the site has not been used for the manufacture of new trains since the early 1990.

More HS2 trains through Crewe could be “major saving” on £56 billion project

“A major saving” could be found in the cost of HS2 if Crewe gets five to seven trains an hour, transport chiefs have been told.

The Government announced in March it is backing updated plans for the Crewe hub, which would support up to seven high-speed trains an hour.

Crewe and Nantwich rail users could be hit by further transport problems as Virgin Trains West Coast staff announce strike action in December and January.

The action comes after RMT Union members voted by 9 to 1 in favour of striking in a dispute over pay.
