This is the scene of today’s massive blaze at Alvaston Business Park which has caused traffic chaos in and around Nantwich.

Firefighters were called to the fire at Garratt’s scrap metal yard, off Middlewich Road, at about 6am this morning (Oct 7).

The fire was found to involve a large quantity of scrap metal which is on the site.

Due to thick smoke, a number of road closures have been put in place by Cheshire Police.

These include the A51 which is closed from Reaseheath to Sainsbury’s roundabout; Sainsbury’s roundabout to Peacock roundabout; Sainsbury’s roundabout to Marshfield Bank roundabout; Colleys Lane at both ends; and Wistaston Green Road at Middlewich Road.

Congestion is already developing in the areas affected by the road closures and drivers are warned to seek an alternative route.

“It is also advisable to keep car windows shut and to take extra care when passing through the smoke, which is being carried by strong winds,” said a Cheshire Fire and Rescue spokeswoman.

Fire crews remain at the scene dealing with the blaze.

“There are no reports of injuries, and it is too early to speculate on the cause of the fire,” added the spokeswoman.
