A lorry which jack-knifed across both carriageways of the M6 in Cheshire, crashing into several cars, caused traffic chaos for thousands of motorists today.

Five cars were caught up in the accident between junctions 21 and 21A which led to closures on the M62 westbound to the M6 southbound, on the M62 eastbound to the M6 southbound, and the M6 at Croft Interchange.

This was to allow emergency services to deal with the scene and recover the vehicles involved and clear up an oil spillage which forced part of the northbound M6 to close.

Two drivers, a man and a woman, from two of the cars were injured and taken to Warrington Hospital.

It was hoped all work and repairs would be finished and the motorways fully reopened by 8.30pm.

But knock on congestion hit major roads across Cheshire as motorists are advised to find alternative routes home during rush hour.

Police want to hear from anyone who witnessed the accident. Contact Cheshire Constabulary Motorway Team on 0845 458 0000.
