A goal by new boy Dennis Sherriff (pictured) was not enough to prevent Nantwich Town losing 3-1 at Bradford Park Avenue.

Nantwich never recovered from going 2-0 down in the first few minutes of a game dominated by strong winds and a muddy surface.

Tom Greaves and a Robert Brodie own goal gave the hosts the perfect start after just four minutes as Nantwich struggled against the wind in the first half.

And the game was all but over in the 20th minute when Nathan Hotte made it 3-0.

Young striker Sherriff, signed by Jimmy Quinn from Stalybridge Celtic in the week, marked his debut with a good goal on 63 minutes.

But the Dabbers couldn’t capitalise on the conditions in the second period and Bradford held firm.

On the positive side, Sherriff, who turns 20 today (January 22), showed what a hit he could be with Nantwich.

“Dennis is a super prospect,” said Quinn. “He still features in Jim Harvey’s plans at Stalybridge Celtic but the lad is keen to come to Nantwich and show what he can do.”

Sherriff started out with Rochdale as a trainee, becoming a regular in their youth and reserve sides – netting 41 goals in the process.

After leaving Spotland in the summer of 2010, he joined Woodley Sports before being snapped up by Stalybridge.

With first team opportunities limited at the Blue Square Bet North high-flyers, he has had short spells at Worksop Town and Radcliffe Borough.

Nantwich’s defeat at Bradford leaves them in 10th place in the Evo-Stik Premier League, nine points off the play-off places.
