Olympic Torch road closure sign

Council chiefs warned thousands of Crewe and Nantwich residents to expect travel and business disruption when the Olympic Torch arrives in town.

Major routes will be shut for more than two hours during peak morning as torchbearers run the Flame around Crewe town centre.

There will also be disruption to bin collections, and to public transport with access to Crewe railway station restricted between 7am and 9.30am.

A number of  bus services between Crewe and Nantwich and surrounding villages will not be operating until after 10am. For a full list click here

A Cheshire East Council spokesman said road closures were agreed after consultation with Cheshire Police.

“We are dedicated to protecting the public and making this once in a lifetime opportunity safe and enjoyable for all Cheshire East residents,” he said.

“But we are also aiming to keep disruption and road closures to a minimum.

“Refuse collections and public transport will also be significantly disrupted as a result of the road closures as will access to some railway stations including Crewe.

“We therefore recommend allowing plenty of time to make any journey during the morning.

“We would encourage people to walk or cycle to see the Torch Relay wherever possible. For those who are travelling in their own vehicle we would encourage you to set off early to ensure you get to your destination in plenty of time.

“We would also ask that vehicles are not parked along the route, which could cause disruption to the Relay. Please park in off street car parks wherever possible.”

List of roads to be closed between 7am and 9.30am tomorrow (May 31) are:

If you can’t make it on the day the Olympic Torch Relay can be viewed live via the BBC website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/torchrelay

  2. I find it interesting (to say the least) that the commercial and domestic life of Crewe is allowed to be totally disrupted for such a trivial “event”.
