A diamond ring has sold at a Nantwich auction for a staggering £108,000.
The sale sets a new record for Peter Wilson antiques and art auctioneers based on Market Street, Nantwich.
The 9 carat heart-shaped ring was sold to a private buyer from Cheshire after a lengthy bidding battle with another private bidder from Wirral.
The ring had been expected to fetch around £20,000.
“It was just one of those wonderful occasions on the rostrum when everything came together and the price just kept on going up and up,” said auctioneer Robert Stones.
“The buyer’s heart was obviously set on acquiring the ring.”
The large colourless diamond was set in white gold, flanked by four baguette-cut stones.
A colourless diamond is the most desirable. It allows more light to pass through it than a coloured diamond, reflecting the light as flashes of “fire”.
The less colour in a diamond the more colourful the fire and therefore the better the diamond grade.
The ring is the most valuable piece of jewellery sold so far at the Nantwich saleroom.
