Christmas Day - Nantwich Methodist Church, Hospital Street

Church volunteers in Nantwich have clubbed together to launch the town’s first community cinema!

Nantwich Methodist Church in Hospital Street is behind the “Nantwich Family Films@4” project.

The church, which underwent a major £1.2 million refurbishment five years ago, will provide the venue in its new-look multi-purpose hall.

And now the group has secured grant funding to buy a large four-metre wide cinema screen.

The cinema is set to be unveiled with a screening of Disney’s “Wreck it Ralph” on January 19.

Geoff Etherton,  the children, young people & families worker at the methodist church, said: “Nantwich has a population of around 20,000 yet does not have a dedicated cinema.

“Our aim is to provide a local and low cost regular screening of films for families, for whom the cost of seeing a film at a multiplex cinema would leave them little change from £50.”

Members of the church group surveyed the community earlier this year and found the lack of a cinema was seen as a “real gap locally”.

More than 30 people attended a trial run in November.

“We have received funding from Nantwich Town Council, Nantwich Rotary, the Rank Foundation, the Co-Operative Community Fund, Chester & Stoke on Trent Methodist District Families Fund, and Cheshire South Methodist Circuit which has enabled us to get the project off the ground, including purchasing a 4m wide screen,” added Geoff.

Films will be screened on the third Sunday of each month, with Sunday January 19 seeing the launch of the project with Disney’s ‘Wreck it Ralph’.

Screenings take place at 4pm, with doors opening at 3.45pm.

Family tickets which cover up to two adults and four children are just £10 per family, and individual tickets cost just £3.

Refreshments are on sale at low cost, and face painting is also available from 3.15pm for those who would like to get into the spirit of the film.

The launch event on January 19 will be officially opened by the local MP, Edward Timpson.
