Danny Johnson, Nantwich Town boss Oct 2013

Nantwich Town manager Danny Johnson has praised his skipper after the Dabbers won three points in their opening league game.

Mark Jones’ fine strike from the edge of the box earned Nantwich a 1-0 away at Buxton.

Tonight they entertain Skelmersdale at the Weaver Stadium, looking to make it two wins from two.

Johnson was delighted with the opening day win – and in particular Jones.

He said: “Coming to Buxton at any time of the season is tough, Martin McIntosh teams are always well organised, well drilled.

“We are pleased to get off the mark. All the nervous energy before the game has come to fruition.

“In the first half I thought we played very well, going up the slope and with the wind in our face, the lads defended resolutely.

“Second half, I thought we were on top and did most of the running taking the game to Buxton.

“Mark (Jones) doesn’t get many and that could probably be his one for the season.

“He had tried one a little bit earlier with his left foot and it didn’t come off.

“He did great and I would give him my man of the match, he has done magnificently.

“I think the forward players need to really appreciate the work Mark Jones and Kyle Blake do. They were absolutely outstanding in midfield.”

Johnson also praised the travelling fans who sang their hearts out throughout the game.

“I said it all last season, I said it all pre-season that they are magnificent. They are a great bunch.

“I will go in the clubhouse after the game, I will get a great welcome, they will be singing their hearts out tonight and enjoying themselves.

“But we as a group – management and players – need to keep giving them something to talk about and smile about.”

Victory tonight (August 19) and six points from six will give the fans just that.

Kick off at Weaver Stadium is 7.45pm.
