Nantwich cyclists group

Thousands of cyclists will be descending on Crewe and Nantwich next week to take part in one of the UK’s most popular cycling events.

The KTG Cheshire Cat 2015, which takes place on Sunday March 29, will see riders heading off from Queen’s Park in Crewe on 105, 80 and 50-mile rides around Cheshire between 8am-10.30am.

Novices can complete the Crewe to Nantwich ride along the “King’s Shilling Way”.

And professional riders can tackle the big challenge – the Mow Cop Killer Mile, with its 25% gradient near the top.

The event is likely to attract 3,000 riders from all over the UK plus some from abroad and is seen as the big season opener.

This year, Smarter Ways to Travel has teamed up with organisers KILOTOGO to add free family rides designed to encourage more people to choose cycling as a way of getting around.

There’s also free, secure cycle parking so more people will dig out their bikes and cycle to the park.

Riders can sign up at www.kilotogo.com or www.allchangeforcrewe.co.uk/smartertravel

There will be lots of on-site activities for spectators throughout the day.

Other attractions include:
• A free Smarter Ways to Travel goodie bag for those taking part in the family ride;
• Led rides, suitable for beginners, at 11.30am, 12.15pm and 1pm;
• Free Dr Bike checks;
• Free police bike security marking with Cheshire Constabulary;
• A chance to test your navigation skills by taking the Queens Park Young Xplorer Challenge;
• Cycle demonstrations and themed games with the Everybody Trust;
• Bikeability tasters;
• Zorbing.

Cllr David Topping, Cheshire East Council’s Cabinet member for commissioning services, said: “Queens Park provides a beautiful backdrop to the event this year, enabling us to offer lots of free attractions to add to the fun on the day.

“There will also be lots of things for our younger visitors to do, from taking part in a treasure hunt, playing in the playground, riding on the land train, taking a pedalo on the lake, playing crazy golf and tackling the inflatable assault course.

“There’s also zorbing and a bucking rodeo ride.”
