Holly Holy Day - Battle of Nantwich 2016 on Mill Island

Organisers of the popular Battle of Nantwich “Holly Holy Day” are once again keeping an eye on the weather ahead of this month’s event.

Holly Holy Day takes place on Saturday January 28, with thousands expected to gather to watch The Sealed Knot re-enact the bloody battle of 400 years ago.

The battle, which marked the end of a long siege of Nantwich, has been commemorated in this way for more than 40 years.

Now, organisers have unveiled a special 50-page booklet which details how this year’s event will run.

During the day, entertaining will begin as early as 10am.

There will be activities run by Nantwich Museum including Civil War tours and musketry demonstrations, as well as relevant exhibitions in the galleries.

In Nantwich town square, community organisation Redshift will be running a stage with live music and entertainment.

There will be tours of St Mary’s Church, book signings, horses parading, Domesday Morris Dancers, street entertainers and hog roast.

At 1.30pm, Sealed Knot troops will gather in the square to lay wreaths.

Then at 1.50pm, they will march down Mill Street to Mill Island where the battle re-enactment will take place from 2pm.

Edward Timpson MP, Patron of the Holly Holy Day Society, said: “This event serves to remind us of our town’s rich character and heritage.

“More than that, it brings colour and crowds, and affords our local shops, stalls, pubs and restaurants a terrific opportunity to showcase their goods and services.

“Our biggest debt of gratitude is owed to the Holly Holy Day Society, whose small group of volunteers raise funds, organise and ensure the continued staging of this event.

“My perennial thanks go to them for all their hard work and for giving up their free time so the rest of us can have this enjoyable experience.”

A spokesperson for the organising team said: “We look forward, once again, to welcoming visitors from throughout the country, who each year brave the elements to watch another spectacular re-enactment courtesy of the dedicated troops from the Sealed Knot.

“We are pleased to announce that Applewood Independent have once again agreed to be our main sponsor for the 2017 event. We are immensely grateful to them for their support.”
