Midsummer Musical - Emma Brown and members of The Band & Drums of the Cheshire Constabulary of The Band and dignitaries

A packed St Mary’s Church audience in Nantwich enjoyed “A Musical Midsummer Night’s Dream” concert, writes Jonathan White.

The concert featured European Mezzo-Soprano Emma Brown and The Band & Drums of the Cheshire Constabulary.

Items performed included Emma Brown singing Calon Lan (in Welsh), paying homage to the British & Irish Lions by singing Hine e Hine(in Maori), Arthur Sullivan’s The Lost Chord, Jerusalem, a moving commemoration of the centenary of the Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele) and the evening reached a crescendo with Pomp & Circumstance.

The Band & Drums of the Cheshire Constabulary played in support of Emma throughout the evening.

Emma read music at the University of Cambridge before continuing her studies in the Netherlands at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague and at Utrecht Conservatoire.

She has attracted acclaim across Europe with her work with The Band of Liberation based in Leiden.

She has performed in front of the Dutch Royal Family, the heads of state of the Netherlands, Belgium, France and is loved by the veterans of the D-Day Landings who look upon Emma as a modern day Vera Lynn.

The Band & Drums of the Cheshire Constabulary consists of musicians from all walks of life, and is representative of the wider community in Cheshire.

They have performed at the European Brass Festival, the International Music Festival in Austria, the D-Day Commemorations in Normandy, the Last Post Service at the Menin Gate, Ypres and the International Military Tattoo in Leiden.

The concert was free admission with a collection in aid of the Church and the Poppy Appeal.
