World Worm Charming Championships

Worm charmers from around the globe will descend on Willaston Primary Academy near Nantwich later this month for the annual World Worm Charming Championships.

The quirky competition is known around the world and hundreds are expected to compete for the Best Worm Charmer trophy.

But local residents keen to take part need to get their application forms in today to Willaston Primary Academy, hosts of the event.

There are 144 plots available for the contest, and forms can be downloaded here.

There are two types – a traditional plot costing £5 for a maximum of two adults and two children.

And a second type costs £10 and is available to teams of competitors who wish to change throughout the ‘charming’ period, but still a maximum of two adults per plot at any one time.

Applications will be placed into a drum and the first 75 applications from Willaston residents drawn from the drum on Tuesday June 12.

Those applications not drawn will be held in reserve in the event of any vacancies occurring.

The additional 69 plots are allocated to competitors from outside the local postal area.

The 39th annual championships take place on Saturday June 23 in the school grounds from 1pm onwards.

As well as the competition, there will be fun inflatables, summer fete games, a BBQ and more on offer for visitors.

At last year’s 38th World Worm Charming Championships, people travelled from India, South Africa, Germany and the Philippines to take part!
