A large hole has appeared in the middle of Church Lane in Wistaston, writes Jonathan White.

Police and highways engineers were called out at a collapsed section of the road, “probably caused by drainage”.

It appeared next to the entrance to yet to be built Witters Field housing estate on Church Lane.

Police initially coned off the affected area, and now Highways Agency have fenced off the hole and setup temporary traffic lights.

The hole – now fondly known as the “Church Lane Chasm” – measures around 4ft long and 3ft deep.

It has emerged that an eagle-eyed resident noticed a depression in the road surface and reported it to the authorities just before the carriageway collapsed.
