Muller - Kieran Mullan (Conservatives) acceptance speech (1)

New Crewe and Nantwich MP Dr Kieran Mullan said today his victory was “for democracy”.

The Conservative candidate registered a comprehensive win polling more than 28,000 votes, a majority of more than 8,000 over Labour’s Laura Smith.

And Dr Mullan firmly believes this was a vote for those who backed Brexit back in 2016 and want it delivered with no more delays.

Many feel Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn gambled by sitting on the fence, and even hinting at a second referendum on Brexit if he won.

Dr Mullan said: “This victory was especially important for democracy, which has won out here.

“It wasn’t just those who voted for Brexit who voted for us – their friends, family, neighbours joined them to ensure the vote was respected.

“This election became about who is in charge, and the people have shown that they are in charge.

“I want to help deliver a fairer and more just society, with world class public services.

“But we know we are not going to achieve this easily, and many people have given us their vote for the first time.

“I would like to recognise the passion that Laura has shown and her service for this community.

“But most of all I would like to thank all those Crewe and Nantwich voters who voted for me.

“I will do my utmost not to let you down and will fight tirelessly for you.”

Earlier, Ms Smith had resigned herself to defeat and said Brexit was the main reason.

She also hinted she would have done things differently to Jeremy Corbyn, who has announced he will be stepping down as leader of the Labour Party.

  1. It’s disappointing that many of us are sinking to the level of children kicking political lumps out of one another. What the country needs is more team spirit to rally round and make us proud again to be British! Political parties often resort to “helicoptering” candidates into an area. It’s not too long ago that Gwynneth Dunwoody’s daughter was brought into the area to stand against Edward Timpson………There was a belief that the electorate in our area would vote for a donkey with a red ribbon around its neck….

Congratulations, look forward to the next 5 years. ?

  3. The so-called doctor won’t know whats hit him. I give him a couple of months before he legs it to wherever he came from.

A sad day for this constituency. Laura Smith was the best MP we’ve ever had, and when you had Gwyneth Dunwoody for a generation, you don’t say that lightly. She and her team grafted long, hard hours for the people of this constituency, and they were repaid like this.

    • It’s nothing to do with the local labour MP at all, sadly no matter how good.an MP is they were let down by Corbin nobody wanted him and the entire country agreed that’s why they failed, it’s all down to their outrageous money tree that we would all have to feed, didn’t work in the ”70’s so no chance now
Look at Newcastle, labour in for 100yrs look at Stoke again solid vote.of enough is enough all around the country the same story, it’s not local its national, we won’t be lied to anymore, labour has to grow up and change, it’s not fit for purpose.
I did not judge this government by the record of the last, you have to wait and see, or get up and lobby for change

  5. Don’t be old don’t be young sick or disabled leopards don’t change their spots and a Doctor should be ashamed of himself representing a party that smashes the working class and is intent on destroying the NHS sad day

    • You mean the working class that voted for the Tories in their droves, recognising that Labour could promise nothing but financial incompetence, whilst thwarting the democratic will of the people…its electorate.

      • The one thing the working class do not forget promises made by politicians better be carried out. Many people only loned their vote Tories only won because Corbyn was so useless

  6. Fantastic a well deserved win, we finally have an MP fit for purpose now.
    There is a Santa Claus!

  7. Oh how I’ve waited for this day for circa 3yrs! Democracy finally shines through. Well done Kieran and team, while the Remain Party who canvassed on the square, who spat their dummy out, can return to the naughty step. Marvellous ??
