The Studio - fundraising concerts Nantwich Jazz festival

Crewe & Nantwich MP Dr Kieran Mullan is urging residents to follow the Government’s social distancing advice to help save lives during the COVID-19 crisis.

Ministers have asked the population to avoid all non-essential contact with others to help stem a feared spike in Coronavirus cases in the UK.

But there have been widespread reports of people continuing to visit cafes, bars and pubs across the constituency.

Wickstead Arms became the first Nantwich pub to publicly declare it was shutting during the crisis.

Now both The Studio and Nakatchas nightclubs in Nantwich have also agreed to close for the time being.

Dr Mullan said “I want to thank both venues for acting responsibly and I am asking all the other venues in town to do the same.

“If your venue is one that is allowing groups to gather, please close.

Kieran Mullan (Conservatives) acceptance speech (1)“I know businesses are facing a huge amount of uncertainty, the government pledges on money are not available to you yet.

“Banks are not cooperating, insurance companies are not helping you.

“I am raising these issues on an hourly basis. But in the meantime we need you to do the right thing.

“I am pleading with people to listen to what the government has asked them to do. We are giving this advice to save lives.

“Yes you might think you are fine, but people mixing are spreading the virus and eventually it will reach people you know and love and they will not be fine.

“We all have to play our part. Going to a café, going to a bar, going to a pub. That is not essential contact.

“Parents need to try their best to stop their children and especially teenagers mixing as well.

“Otherwise, what we are trying to achieve in closing schools won’t be achieved.”

Dr Mullan has urged younger people to act as volunteers to help support organisations in place in Cheshire during the pandemic.

“I am working with a number of community organisations and charities as the MP so we can coordinate our response as a community in partnership with Cheshire East.

“We are going to need volunteers. In my experience, a lot of our existing volunteers supporting a wide range of organisations are from groups that will be at risk themselves and will need to stay at home.”

“So we need as many people as possible to step up, and help if they are able. I know not everyone will be able to, especially those with caring responsibilities.”

“Younger people without children are going to have an important role to play.

“Many people who might normally be doing sport or visiting the gym or going to the pub are now being asked not to do that. So think about helping instead.”

Local organisations he is working with include the Wishing Well Project, Hopes and Beams and local fundraising groups such as Rotary and Lions groups to coordinate and direct support.
