The busy A51 Nantwich bypass was closed off in a police incident this afternoon (June 4).

Traffic was stopped in both directions as a large number of police vehicles were seen stopping a car.

Two men and one woman from the blue Citroen were arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted theft.

A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 3pm on Thursday 4 June, officers from Cheshire Police, supported by the National Police Air Service, conducted a pre-emptive vehicle stopped a blue Citroen C3 on the A51 near Nantwich.

“The three occupants of the vehicle, three men from Mansfield, were arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted theft.

“One of the men was also arrested for a breach of a court order.

“The arrests relates to an incident which occurred at a store in Ruthin earlier today.”

A 22-year-old woman from Stoke-on-Trent has since been given a conditional caution after admitting an attempted theft at a shop on Station Road, Ruthin, North Wales, earlier that day.

A 26-year-old man from Mansfield, who was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and driving whilst disqualified, has been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

A 22-year-old man was arrested for failing to appear at court.

Marian Pitis, of Westfield Lane, Mansfield, is due to appear at Warrington Magistrates’ Court via a video link on Friday June 5.

It happened between the Peacock and Alvaston roundabouts on the single carriageway stretch at around 3pm today.

Witnesses said a police helicopter was also overhead at the time of the incident.

One witness said: “Police had stingers out on either lorry or car. Helicopters and undercover police everywhere!”
