South Shields - return to action - Nantwich Town FC - Weaver Stadium (2)

Nantwich Town could be back in Northern Premier League action as early as September, it has emerged.

The NPL has announced a provisional season start date for steps 3 and 4 of Saturday September 19, subject to further approval.

Nantwich and other clubs are expected to be given further information this week following Sunday’s League Management Committee meeting.

An NPL spokesperson said: “In the interim, clubs are urged to continue to follow the guidance currently in place and as per Government guidelines.”

The FA has recommended a phased return to competitive football, with no fixtures taking place before the end of July.

During this time competitive training can take place, with groups limited to 30 people including coaches.

Competitive matches, including pre-season friendlies, can begin from Saturday, August 1.

The FA and the Leagues are aiming for a September start of competitive matches in the NLS.

Fixtures are proposed to commence on:

• Step 1 & 2: From Saturday September 5
• Steps 3 & 4: From Saturday September 19
• Steps 5 & 6: From Saturday September 5

Nantwich Town’s 2019-20 season was curtailed in March at the start of the COVID-19 outbreak in the UK.

The Dabbers were in a promising position challenging for a play-off place at the time.

The Government announced last week that some supporters may return to watch competitive football as early as October, with a number of pilot/trials taking place on how fans can social distance in stadia.
