Nantwich Reserves are returning to Cheshire Football League after 15 years, writes Michael Chatwin.

The Cheshire Football League  is planning to start its season on September 5.

And Nantwich Town will see a reserves team return to the competition for the first time since 2004/05 – when it was known as the Mid-Cheshire League.

Nantwich Reserves finished next to bottom of the old Second Division, switching to the Reserve Division of the North West Counties League the following season.

The Nantwich first team last competed in the Mid-Cheshire League back in the 1964/65 campaign – finishing runners-up to Middlewich Athletic.

Among the opposition were Hartford who the Dabbers defeated 5-0 in the penultimate game of the season – the prolific Micky Brookes grabbing a hat-trick.

Ironically, Hartford FC is one of the sides the Dabbers’ second string will meet in League 2 of the Cheshire League in the coming season.

Lyndon Wain’s side is also set to face Blacon Youth, Golbourne Sports, Holmes Chapel Hurricanes, Orford, Whalley Range and the reserve sides of Pilkingtons, Sandbach United, St.Helens Town, Warrington Rylands, West Didsbury & Chorlton and Wythenshawe Amateurs.

Lyndon (pictured), Nantwich Town Community Development Manager, said: “The club are thrilled to have formed a reserve side as it is vital to continue the pathway of the club’s young footballers.

“We will be determined to represent the club in the same way as the first team with an emphasis on playing attractive football.

“I’m really pleased to be leading the group and really excited by the quality within the group.”
