airman's grave sculpture in Nantwich

A video exploring the history of the Airman’s Grave in Nantwich has been produced as part of the new “Hallowed Ground” YouTube series of historical narrations, writes Hannah Youds.

The video, just 15 minutes long, was made by Cast The Past Production, a group who aim to bring communities closer through stories of their local history.

And this episode focuses on Lt. Arthur Brown – an American pilot in the Second World War and how “an event in January 1944 will forge a lasting bond between the pilot and the Cheshire town” of Nantwich.

The pilot lost control of his plane in 1944 but instead of bailing out, he stayed by the controls to steer it clear from Nantwich town centre and prevented serious loss of civilian life. It crashed on the banks of the River Weaver.

“We’re used to some video editing, but this has been a new challenge,” said Stephen Evans, a history enthusiast from Northenden who narrates the video.

“I did research about the story and found it fascinating.

“It’s got everything that engages audiences as it is heart-wrenching yet heart-warming.

“I think it should be shared with as many people as possible.”

Mr Evans has previously uploaded videos on his own YouTube channel ‘Writing with Steve’, focusing on the importance of creative writing and wellbeing.

However, the first video from Cast the Past, titled ‘A Small Gift’, was released in December 2020.

Both the videos on their YouTube channel have received more than 100 views, with all the facts and information supplied being historically accurate.

He added: “We’re absolutely astonished, since the two videos went out we’ve had so much positive feedback.

“We’re all volunteers.

“Even though we don’t derive any money, we are creating opportunities for people to learn skills and are always looking for people to contribute.

“If anyone has a really interesting story, based on fact, we’re really interested to hear from you.

“Another aspect is to include communities by asking people to come forward and be voice actors for our videos.”
