A Nantwich hair and beauty professional has joined a campaign to help tackle domestic abuse.<\/p>\n
Julie Barton has received training as part of the Behind the Mask initiative launched in July 2019.<\/p>\n
It aims to help professionals spot the signs that someone may be experiencing domestic abuse and how they could respond in the best way.<\/p>\n
Julie, who runs Julie Barton Beauty & Skin Care in Nantwich, said she was delighted to be one of a growing number of beauty therapists, hair dressers and salons to take the special training.<\/p>\n
Domestic Abuse may take one or more forms that could be physical, psychological, sexual, harassing, coercive or controlling.<\/p>\n
It can be hard to spot and injuries may be masked by clothing or make-up.<\/p>\n
Around 1 in 4 women will experience abuse in their lifetime.<\/p>\n
With some insight, a therapist\u2019s unique relationship with their clients may reveal what\u2019s hidden behind their \u2018mask\u2019.<\/p>\n
A campaign spokesperson said: “Many women use the services of a hairdresser and beauty therapist and tell them things that they wouldn\u2019t say to anyone else.<\/p>\n
“We may notice injuries or the consequence of them. With regular clients, they may recognise behavioural changes.<\/p>\n
“Our salons and treatment areas may be seen as safe and relaxing spaces to our clients and it may be one of the few opportunities they have to reach out for help or be open to it.<\/p>\n
“It\u2019s not about intervening or interfering, it\u2019s simply suggesting the services of those who are specially trained to help in a way that\u2019s informed and meaningful.<\/p>\n
“Our listening ear along with a kind word may change or save a life.”<\/p>\n
Behind the Mask training is available free and the content will be reviewed annually.<\/p>\n
Participants will be invited to revisit the training to refresh their knowledge every two years.<\/p>\n
In addition, many hair and beauty academies have agreed to incorporate training into their courses so the next generation of hairdressers and beauty therapists are aware of the signs of domestic abuse and how they can truly help.<\/p>\n
